LAMDA Syllabus and Beyond

My artistic practice is heavily influenced by my Tamil roots. Tamil artists are seldom niche artists who specialise in only one art form. For example Bharatanatyam dancers will often perform into old age, choreograph their own pieces, teach many of their own students, be academic historians, trained singers and generally act as keepers of culture for the community. It is from this place of intention that I continue to engage with my artistic pursuits. Since re-ingaging with my own active artistic pursuits, I have noticed improvements in the depth of the subjects I teach.

As long as I keep growing as an artist, that is added value that I can offer as a teacher and mentor. For instance, through teaching public speaking, I also focus on developing key skills in critical thinking, analysis of sources and media literacy. Under the subject titles of acting, verse and prose, devising drama and public speaking, I have detailed how I draw on my wide ranging education, training, skill sets and experiences to enhance lessons. Having taught for 7+ years, I have received feedback from some of my oldest students, who are now young adults, that they made great use of the skills they learned in our lessons to navigate both academic and real life.

Every generation faces it’s unique challenges. We are already seeing the rise of mis-information have detrimental effects in society. In a world that grows increasingly divisive and filled with mis-information, I believe it is crucial that we prepare the next generation with the skills to research, understand nuance and think critically.
