I do not like to focus on grades too much. While grades can be a great way to track personal progress, there are a few things to remember in the case of LAMDA exams:

  • The marking of the students is ultimately subjective. While in my experience, LAMDA has been thorough in it’s attempts to make the marking process as fair as possible, it is ultimately in the nature of the art form that there is a certain level of subjectivity that will always remain.
  • I have worked with children of all ability levels. Regardless of the student, I have found discussing marks and grades too much counterproductive to the learning process. The academic space is already hypercompetitive as it is, and I don’t think it is necessary to add to this pressure the students already face.
  • I prefer to meet the students where they are, and coach them to meet their own individual goals. Ultimately most of my students will probably pursue careers outside of the performing arts. While they may be interested in learning  performance skills and enjoy lessons, students may not prioritise Speech and Drama. In this case, I prioritise teaching them the skills they need, and coaching them through as many lessons as they are willing to take, at the pace they are willing to work at.
